Uncovering Extremely Metal-poor Stars in the Milky Way’s Ultrafaint Dwarf Spheroidal Satellite Galaxies

چکیده
We present new metallicity measurements for 298 individual red giant branch stars in eight of the least luminous dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) in the Milky Way (MW) system. Our technique is based on medium-resolution Keck DEIMOS spectroscopy coupled with spectral synthesis. We present the first spectroscopic metallicities at of stars in a dwarf galaxy, with individual stellar metallicities as low as . Because [Fe/H] ! 3.0 [Fe/H] p 3.3 our [Fe/H] measurements are not tied to empirical metallicity calibrators and are sensitive to arbitrarily low metallicities, we are able to probe this extremely metal-poor regime accurately. The metallicity distribution of stars in these dSphs is similar to the MW halo at the metal-poor end. We also demonstrate that the luminosity-metallicity relation previously seen in more luminous dSph galaxies ( to 8.8) extends smoothly down to an M p 13.4 V absolute magnitude of . The discovery of extremely metal-poor stars in dSphs lends support to the M p 3.7 V LCDM galaxy assembly paradigm wherein dwarf galaxies dissolve to form the stellar halo of the MW. A New View of the Dwarf Spheroidal Satellites of the Milky Way from Vlt/flames1: Where Are the Very Metal Poor Stars?
As part of the Dwarf galaxies Abundances and Radial-velocities Team (DART) Programme, we have measured the metallicities of a large sample of stars in four nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph): Sculptor, Sextans, Fornax and Carina. The low mean metal abundances and the presence of very old stellar populations in these galaxies have supported the view that they are fossils from the early Univ...
متن کاملDwarf-spheroidal satellites: are they of tidal origin?
The Milky Way and Andromeda must have formed through an initial epoch of substructure merging. As a result of fundamental physical conservation laws tidal-dwarf galaxies (TDGs) have likely been produced. Here we show that such TDGs appear, after a Hubble-time of dynamical evolution in the host dark-matter halo, as objects that resemble known dSph satellite galaxies. We discuss the possibility t...
متن کاملHigh-Resolution Spectroscopy of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars in the Least Evolved Galaxies: Ursa Major II and Coma Berenices
We present spectra of six metal-poor stars in two of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way (MW), Ursa Major II, and Coma Berenices obtained with the Keck/High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES). These observations include the first high-resolution spectroscopic observations of extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H] < −3.0) stars not belonging to the MW halo field star population. We ...
متن کاملOn the absence of very metal-poor stars in the dwarf spheroidal satellites of the Milky Way New views from DART
The currently favoured concordance cosmological model proposes that large galaxies are the result of mergers of smaller systems. The local population of dwarf galaxies could be the direct descendants of these building blocks. Their low content of heavy chemical elements and the very old ages of some of their stars suggest that they are fossils from the early Universe. We present here the result...
متن کاملThe Highly Unusual Chemical Composition of the Hercules Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We report on the abundance analysis of two red giants in the faint Hercules dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy. These stars show a remarkable deficiency in the neutron-capture elements, while the hydrostatic α-elements (O, Mg) are strongly enhanced. Our data indicate [Ba/Fe] and [Mg/Fe] abundance ratios of .−2 dex and ∼+0.8 dex, respectively, with essentially no detection of other n-capture element...
